10 Best Things to Do in Destin, FL This Summer

Destin sits on one of the most distinctive stretches of coastline in the country. Emerald green water, sugar-white sand, and a harbor that has been the center of Gulf Coast fishing culture for generations.

It also gets a lot of visitors in the summer who spend the first couple of days figuring out what to actually do here. This is the shortcut — written by people who are on the water in Destin every single day.

1. Henderson Beach State Park

If there is one beach in Destin that locals will actually direct you to, it is Henderson Beach State Park.

No resort crowds. No umbrella rentals every 10 feet. Just 208 acres of protected coastline with dunes, sea oats, and some of the clearest Gulf water on the Florida panhandle. The sand here is the fine, powdery white that Destin is actually known for — not the packed, foot-traffic version you get in front of the big hotels.

Go early. The parking fills up by mid-morning in peak summer. Bring your own chairs, pack a cooler, and plan to stay.

Henderson Beach State Park is located at 17000 Emerald Coast Pkwy, Destin, FL 32541.

2. Harborwalk Village

Harborwalk Village is the heart of Destin — a waterfront stretch of restaurants, bars, live music, and charter docks built right along the harbor's edge.

It is worth a full evening. Come for dinner at one of the waterfront restaurants, stay for live music, and catch the Thursday night fireworks show that runs from late spring through Labor Day. The show fires over the harbor — free, visible from the boardwalk, and genuinely impressive from the water if you happen to be on a boat.

Harborwalk is also where you will find the Destin fishing fleet. The boats come in through the afternoon — walk the docks and see what came off the Gulf that day. It is a scene worth watching even if you are not fishing.

Harborwalk Village is located at 66 Hwy 98 E, Destin, FL 32541.

3. Crab Island — Get There By Private Charter

Crab Island is the experience that separates people who visited Destin from people who actually experienced it.

It is a sandbar in the middle of Destin Harbor — not an island, despite the name. The water is waist-deep and clear. Floating vendors sell food and drinks. Music drifts across the water from boats anchored in every direction. In summer it is one of the most uniquely Florida things happening anywhere on the Gulf Coast, and the only way to get there is by boat.

The best way to go is on a private charter with East Pass Excursions. Your group gets the entire boat — no strangers, no shared schedule. The 23-foot pontoon comes loaded with a floating lily pad, inflatable couch, Bluetooth speaker, snorkel gear, and cooler space. Bring your own food and drinks. The trip runs four hours out of Destin Harbor, and it is almost always not enough time.

East Pass Excursions also runs 6-hour and 8-hour Crab Island trips out of Sandestin Marina aboard The Whiskey for guests staying on that side of the Emerald Coast.

Book online at eastpassexcursions.com or call 850-582-1128.

4. Get on the Water and Watch for Dolphins

Bottlenose dolphins are year-round residents in Destin Harbor and the surrounding bay. Summer is when they are most active and most visible — feeding in the shallows, riding boat wakes, surfacing without warning just off the bow.

The best way to see them is from the water. East Pass Excursions runs bay and dolphin tours — 2 to 3 hours on a private boat in the calm waters between the Gulf and the harbor. The captains know these waters and know where dolphins tend to run. When a dolphin surfaces 10 feet from the boat, nobody is looking at their phone.

Book a dolphin tour at eastpassexcursions.com or call 850-582-1128.

5. Fish the Gulf Out of Destin Harbor

Destin has been called the World's Luckiest Fishing Village since the 1950s, and the Gulf Coast fishery here backs it up. The emerald water off the Destin coast sits over a natural reef and ledge system that holds a remarkable range of species within reach of a day trip.

Summer is one of the best windows of the year. Mahi are running. Amberjack, red snapper, grouper, and king mackerel are all active offshore. East Pass Excursions runs private full-day fishing excursions out of both Destin Harbor and Sandestin Marina aboard The Whiskey — experienced local captains, fully private trips, no shared boats.

If a Gulf fishing trip has been on your list, summer is the time and Destin is the place. Book at eastpassexcursions.com or call 850-582-1128.

6. Sunset Cruise From Destin Harbor or Sandestin Marina

The light on the Gulf an hour before sunset is the reason people come back to Destin every year.

East Pass Excursions runs private sunset cruises out of both Destin Harbor and Sandestin Marina — two-hour evening trips aboard The Whiskey where you bring your own drinks, find a comfortable seat, and let the Gulf do the rest. It is a simple trip with no agenda other than being on the water when the sky turns.

Good for couples, small groups, birthdays, and anyone who needs to end a day right. Book at eastpassexcursions.com or call 850-582-1128.

7. Eat Gulf Seafood on the Water

Destin has no shortage of restaurants, but the ones worth going out of your way for are on or near the harbor.

AJ's Seafood and Oyster Bar is the classic — outdoor deck, views over the water, grouper sandwiches that have been feeding Destin visitors for decades. Get there early for lunch or late for dinner in summer; the waits at peak hours are real.

For a more local pace, walk Harborwalk Village and see what looks right. The fish on the menu came out of the same Gulf you are looking at — that is not something you can say about many places.

8. Big Kahuna's Water Park (For Families With Kids)

If you are traveling with kids who need a full-day activity that wears them out completely, Big Kahuna's Water Park is the answer. Wave pool, a full run of waterslides, lazy river, and enough to keep multiple age groups occupied without much coordination.

Go on a weekday. Summer weekend crowds at water parks on the Florida panhandle are not subtle. A Tuesday or Wednesday visit is a different experience.

Big Kahuna's is located at 1007 Hwy 98 E, Destin, FL 32541.

9. Destin Commons

Destin Commons is an open-air shopping and entertainment complex about a mile from the beach — and one of the better places in the area to spend an evening when you want something other than the harbor scene.

Dinner options, a movie theater, boutique shops, and enough space to walk around without feeling rushed. It skews toward families and is low-key by design. Good option for the night after a long day on the water.

10. Take the Drive Down 30A

Highway 30A runs east from Destin along the Gulf through some of the most visually distinctive coastline on the Florida panhandle — Grayton Beach, Seaside, Rosemary Beach, Alys Beach.

It is worth a half-day drive even if you are not staying in that direction. The architecture in Seaside and Rosemary Beach is unlike anything else on the Gulf Coast. Stop for lunch, walk around, and take the long way back along the water. No itinerary needed.
